چکیده

The parallel-plate capacitor equation is widely used in contemporary material research for nanoscale applications and nanoelectronics. To apply this equation, flat and smooth electrodes are assumed for a capacitor. This essential assumption is often violated for thin-film capacitors because the formation of nanoscale roughness at the electrode interface is very probable for thin films grown via common deposition methods. In this work, we experimentally and theoretically show that the electrical capacitance of thin-film capacitors with realistic interface roughness is significantly larger than the value predicted by the parallel-plate capacitor equation. The degree of the deviation depends on the strength of the roughness, which is described by three roughness parameters for a self-affine fractal surface. By applying an extended parallel-plate capacitor equation that includes the roughness parameters of the electrode, we are able to calculate the excess capacitance of the electrode with weak roughness. Moreover, we introduce the roughness parameter limits for which the simple parallel-plate capacitor equation is sufficiently accurate for capacitors with one rough electrode. Our results imply that the interface roughness beyond the proposed limits cannot be dismissed unless the independence of the capacitance from the interface roughness is experimentally demonstrated. The practical protocols suggested in our work for the reliable use of the parallel-plate capacitor equation can be applied as general guidelines in various fields of interest.

The chemical structure and electrical properties of anodized titania are investigated for their application as conformal ultra-thin dielectrics on high surface area titanium electrodes. The chemical structure is studied by XPS depth profiling for the first time along with the role of anodization conditions on dielectric thickness, leakage current, and capacitance densities. Dielectric–electrode interactions in glass and silicon-compatible thin-film (Ba,Sr)TiO3 capacitors

This paper investigates the role of electrode– dielectric interactions, and barrier materials on leakage current, breakdown voltage, yield and reliability of thinfilm (Ba,Sr)TiO3 capacitors on silicon and glass substrates. The first part of the paper investigates the electrode–dielectric interactions with sputtered Cu and Ni electrodes to identify the mechanisms that lead to high leakage curren...

Thin-film passives in RF/microwave circuits

Until recently, most microwave capacitors were based on fired multilayer ceramic technology. In this process, layers of highly conductive electrode metal alloys are interleaved with low-loss ceramic dielectrics in a multilayer fashion until the target capacitance is obtained. The resulting stack is then sintered into a monolithic structure in a high-temperature firing process. This process cont...

Strategies of Miniaturised Reference Electrodes Integrated in a Silicon Based “one chip” pH Sensor

Different types of Ag/AgCl reference electrodes have been realised by means of thinand thick-film technique. For inner electrolyte, KCl-containing membranes have been deposited and different coatings have been used to protect the reference electrode from a fast leaching out of KCl. The stability of the potential of the reference electrodes without KClcontaining membranes in 3 M KCl was about 7 ...

Electrical Properties of Thin-Film Capacitors Fabricated Using High Temperature Sputtered Modified Barium Titanate

Simple thin-film capacitor stacks were fabricated from sputter-deposited doped barium titanate dielectric films with sputtered Pt and/or Ni electrodes and characterized electrically. Here, we report small signal, low frequency capacitance and parallel resistance data measured as a function of applied DC bias, polarization versus applied electric field strength and DC load/unload experiments. Th...
